Marley Tolbert’s Journey from Hawaii to the NBA Summer League

In the heart of Hawaii, where the sun meets the ocean, lives a young basketball fan and rising star named Marley Tolbert. The 4th grader is already making a name for himself on and off the basketball court, showing what the next generation of playing basketball is all about.

Marley’s journey is a story of determination, much like the game of basketball itself. Marley’s dad, Michael, started his life in Brooklyn, NY, and at the age of 8 had to learn to navigate life on his own. After moving to Knoxville, Tennessee at a young age and then to Atlanta, Georgia as he began adulthood, Michael eventually found himself ready for a change. Seeking a fresh start, he took a trip to Hawaii and felt instantly at home. He loved it so much that he decided to stay, building a life there with Marley’s mom.

His mom often played Bob Marley’s “3 Little Birds,” baby Marley would move along to the beat, which is how he got his name. Born three months early, Marley’s arrival was nothing short of miraculous. He briefly stopped breathing, but as "3 Little Birds" played in the background, the doctors were able to stabilize him and bring a sense of relief to the room.

From Hawaii to Hoops

Marley’s basketball journey is a testament to his dedication. After Michael reconnected with family in Nashville, Marley joined an AAU team in Tennessee, giving him the chance to play with some of the best young players in the mainland U.S.

While Hawaii is home, the island’s seclusion presented challenges in finding consistent high-level competition. To support Marley’s growth and love for the game, his father, Michael, recognized the importance of exposing him to new opportunities. Each summer, Marley heads to the mainland, staying with family and friends, where he plays in tournaments and enjoys a mix of basketball and typical childhood fun. During the school year, Marley continues to sharpen his skills back home in Hawaii, helping to raise the level of play and even bringing teammates along on his journey.

A Dream Come True at the 2024 NBA Summer League

This past summer, Marley’s love for basketball soared to new heights when he joined NBA Experiences at the 2024 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The excitement was clear as he stepped into the Thomas and Mack Center, where the future stars of the NBA show off their skills. Marley got to go behind the scenes and see areas normally reserved for players, VIPs, and those it takes to put on such a big event.

But the experience didn’t stop there. Marley soaked in the energy of the NBA EXP Lounge and watched the action up close on the Michelob Ultra Courtside Deck. For a young basketball fan like Marley, it was a dream come true.

Looking Ahead

Marley Tolbert is more than just a young athlete; he’s part of the next generation of NBA fans - passionate, driven, and ready to make their mark. His journey from Hawaii to the 2024 NBA Summer League shows that basketball is more than just a game - it’s about passion, community, ohana (family) and a way of life.

Marley’s story is just beginning, and we’re excited to see where his journey takes him. We’re proud to support young fans and upcoming stars like Marley as they chase their dreams with NBA Experiences.
