The Evolution of the NBA Cup

A Trophy with a Legacy and a New Name

The NBA Cup, the prestigious trophy awarded to the champion of the 2023 NBA In-Season Tournament, has an intricate design steeped in meaning. Designed by Tiffany & Co. in collaboration with artist Victor Solomon and handcrafted in Rhode Island, this trophy is a symbol of excellence and competition.

  • Standing 23 inches tall, the height marks the year the tournament was established - 2023.
  • Weighing 35 pounds, it reflects the three groups of five teams in each conference during the Group Play stage.
  • Its base features 30 net openings, representing the league's 30 teams, while the eight prongs signify the eight teams advancing to the knockout rounds.
  • The trophy’s three-tier base is a nod to the three games a champion must win to claim the title. Crafted from sterling silver, vermeil, and black ceramic, and coated in 24-karat gold, it’s both a work of art and a symbol of basketball prowess.

Announced on July 8, 2023, and debuting during the 2023–24 NBA Season, the tournament was initially known as the NBA In-Season Tournament. However, with a significant partnership announcement, the event has rebranded to the Emirates NBA Cup starting in 2024. This change follows a multi-year deal between the NBA and Emirates, adding a new layer of prestige to the trophy and tournament.

The first inaugural championship game on December 9, 2023, saw the Los Angeles Lakers clinch the first NBA Cup against the Indiana Pacers (123-109). As the tournament evolves under its new name, it continues to celebrate the pinnacle of in-season basketball competition.
